Post Operative Recovery

Post operative recovery includes hospitalization for approximately 4 to 7 days, and home recovery of around 6-8 weeks.
Most of the patients are able to walk on the next day of the operation. Regular physiotherapy helps in improving the strehgth of the muscles surrounding the joint. However, patients are advised to

  • Use crutches or a cane to walk until otherwise stated.
  • Stay within safe range of motion.
  • Bathe and shower as directed.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Frequent moving.
  • While resting in bed, compression stockings are used to reduce clot formation.
  • Ensure that you have a follow up in case of fever or pain/swelling/redness/drainage or if bleeding increases in the knee.

    Overall,
If you are considering knee replacement surgery, you are probably anticipating that life after the surgery will be much like life before it, only without the pain. In many ways, you are correct. But change doesn't happen overnight and your active participation in the healing process is necessary to ensure a successful outcome.
