Before performing a Knee Replacement Operation, you are
advised to go through a set of pathological tests which include
x-rays, blood tests to assess health, urine tests to be sure no
infection exists, and verification that all appropriate dental
work is complete.
The operative procedure typically takes around 1.5 hrs
Currently two types of artificial joints are available in the
market, the fixed and mobile bearing. The mobile bearing
replacments are costlier, but reduce chances of early wear or
loosening failure. The choice is usually made based on age,
gender, occupation, disability level, pain intensity,
interference with lifestyle and other medical conditions.
Currently, a majority of knee replacements are cemented into
place. Cemented knee replacements have a generally excellent
track record and may last more than 20 years. The longevity and
performance of a knee replacement depends on several factors,
including activity level, weight and general health.
Recently hybrid knee replacements are also done, where the
femoral component is inserted without cement, and the tibial
component is inserted with cement. These replacements also show
positive results. |
